Kilkenny CIC overall winner of People of the Year Award
This year Kilkenny CIC celebrated 40 years of service to the people of Kilkenny and were honoured to be named as one of the finalists in this year's Kilkenny County Council/Rehab People of the Year Awards. It came as a great surprise when it was announced that they were awarded overall winners in November.
Each year members of the public are called upon to nominate people from Co Kilkenny who have made a difference to the lives of others, increased civic pride, or through acts of bravery have touched the lives of the community. The awards are made in association with Rehab, Kilkenny Local Authorities and the Kilkenny People newspaper.
Mayor Andrew McGuinness who presented the award to Kilkenny CIC said he was proud and honoured to present the award to Kilkenny CIC and said: "It is well known that staff at the centre go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to fighting for social justice and ensuring every citizens has access to their rights." He went on to say "whether it's helping elderly people to complete complicated application forms or informing those in distress of their rights, the staff and volunteers at the Citizens Information Centre have put themselves firmly in the corner of the local community and have been a shining light for many local families and individuals at times of need and distress. They truly deserve this honour".
Earlier in October Kilkenny CIC celebrated 40 years of service with a special celebration in the CIC. Founding members Anne Reynolds-Bowen, Elaine Bolger and John O'Neill spoke at the event, recalling the values upon which the service was founded. Sarah Drea, Development Manager and Susan Shanahan, Citizens Information Board also spoke, thanking volunteers and staff for their work over the years. There are 56 volunteers currently working with the Citizens Information Centre in Kilkenny as well as outreaches in Callan, Graiguenamanagh and Mooncoin.
