Clondalkin CIS Celebrates 25 years

October 2014

Clondalkin Citizens Information Service recently celebrated 25 years serving their local community. During September the service held events and service promotion activities to mark the occasion which included a special celebration on September 26th which was attended by founding members, board, volunteers and employees, past and present. The service was formed by local people with an ethos of service to the local community, and has grown to become a service that helps in the region of 13,000 people in the Clondalkin and Lucan area each year.

It all began in 1989 when a handful of dedicated volunteers came together to help improve the lives of others in their own community. They received training with the then National Social Services Board and they had the service up and running in 1990. Many of the original founders are still involved with the service today. In January 2004 the service became Clondalkin Citizens Information Service, incorporating Lucan CIC, which itself celebrated 30 years of service in 2012.

Since 2002, Clondalkin has piloted and implemented many advocacy projects, including an innovative local disability advocacy service. Today the service manages a Regional Advocacy Support project, with an Advocacy worker who supports the development of Advocacy in all Citizen Information Centres in Dublin. One of the highlights over the years included a visit from President McAleese in 2009 and more recently the service achieved the EFQM GOLD STAR validation, a quality award for excellence that is recognised by businesses and services all over Europe.
