40th Anniversary Celebrations in Tipperary Citizens Information Centre

June 2014

Tipperary CIC recently celebrated 40 years of service to the community. The anniversary celebrations began with a visit to Tipperary CIC offices in St Michael Street. The main event was held in The Tipperary EXCEL Centre. Invited guests included founding members and former volunteers and representatives of the community, statutory, and voluntary organisations that work closely with the volunteers and staff in Tipperary CIC on a regular basis to provide an excellent service to the community. Mary Plunkett Development Manager of Co. Tipperary CIS was MC for the afternoon. Guest speakers included Toni Gleeson, Chairperson Co. Tipperary CIS, and Geraldine Cullen, Training Services Manager, CIB. The guest of honour was Noeline Blackwell, Director General, FLAC, a former volunteer with Tipperary CIC in the early years. Noeline was delighted to launch a commemorative booklet which contained a photographic collection of forty years of unbroken service by dedicated volunteers and staff.

Part of the celebrations included a presentation on Tipperary CIC to over 800 pupils in the three secondary schools in the town. Pupils were then invited to write an essay entitled "The role of the Citizens Information Centre in a digital world". Competition winners Caitlin Byrnes and Katie Quirke read out their winning essays which was one of the highlights of the afternoon.

Presentations were made to Pat Myers and Tom Fitzgerald, founding members, who continue their involvement with the service to the present day. The celebratory event drew to a close when Pat and Tom cut the cake, designed in the shape of the original "Red Book" used to record queries. A long way from the computerised system used today.
