Presentation of the Special Purpose Certificate in Management Skills for Managers of Advocacy Services
The presentation of the Special Purpose Certificate in Management Skills for Managers of Advocacy Services [Level 7, National Framework of Qualifications] by Blanchardstown Institute of Technology (ITB) was held on March 12th 2014 in ITB.
This was the second offering of the Special Purpose Certificate in Management Skills for Managers of Advocacy Services and fourteen people graduated on the day. Eight of the recipients were Development Managers from the network of Citizens Information Services (CIS) and one an Information Provider. This brings the number of CIS Development Managers who have the Special Purpose Certificate in Management Skills for Managers of Advocacy Services to 22. In addition 5 of the recipients of the Award in 2014 were from Third Age, Advocacy Service for older people. A mix of paid and volunteer advocates and advocacy team leads, Third Age brought a new dimension to the programme in 2013 and closer ties between Citizens Information services and Third Age have been fostered because of participation on this programme. It also demonstrates that this award, while developed for Citizens Information services, has a broader reach and appeal to the voluntary and community sector who provide advocacy services.
The graduates were presented with their award by Karen Feery, Head of Department of Humanities ITB. Tony McQuinn, CEO of Citizens Information Board spoke at the ceremony and congratulated the graduates on the commitment required to achieve qualifications while also running busy services. Ann Reid, Development Manager, Tallaght CIS and learner representative spoke on behalf of the graduates. Ann was very complimentary of the programme saying it was very worthwhile and the modules were interesting and well presented. The mix with the Third Age group assisted the group to think about issues and principles, as opposed to being bogged down in circumstances. Ann also commented that the course has made a difference and has impacted upon and improved performance on a daily basis.
The Special Purpose Certificate in Management Skills for Managers of Advocacy Services was developed in response to requests from Citizens Information Service Development Managers for training on the supervision of advocacy case work and human resource management. CIB worked in close collaboration with Citizens Information Services and the School of Business Studies and Humanities at ITB to develop the programme. In 2013, the programme was delivered in part in Thurles Co. Tipperary using the facilities of the Tipperary Institute and St. Patrick's College, Thurles. The course covers the modules, Principles and Practice of Advocacy, Managing Advocacy in Practice, Advocacy: Case Review and Supervision and Human Resource Management.
