Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS) is the national Sign Language Interpreting Service for Ireland. Established in 2007, through the Citizens Information Board (SLIS), our mission is to promote, advocate and ensure the availability of quality sign language interpretation services. One such service is the Irish Remote Interpreting Service (IRIS). IRIS provides an online live video link to an Irish Sign Language (ISL) / English interpreter using programmes such as Skype for Business. This facilitates communication between Deaf citizens and service providers and increases access and inclusion and service reach.
With the passing of the Irish Sign Language (ISL) Act 2017, national policy now recognises that the lack of sign language interpreters is creating systematic barriers to the provision of inclusive and equitable public and other services for Ireland’s Deaf community.
The National Disability Inclusion Strategy (NDIS) 2017-2021 prioritises actions to address these inequalities and is resourcing SLIS to expand the Irish Remote Interpreting Service as one way to support Deaf people to participate fully in all aspects of public life.
To equip SLIS in this work, SLIS is now seeking expressions of interest from management or organisational development experts to conduct an evaluative study of the IRIS service in 2018.
We expect the contract to commence in September 2018 with a final report by the 29 November 2018.
