New Threshold Housing Advice Service based in Co. Mayo CIS

July 2015

Threshold, the national housing charity, today announced the launch of a housing advice and advocacy outreach service for Co. Mayo. The service, which will operate from Castlebar Citizens Information Service, will provide tenants with advice on their rights and work with them to solve their housing problems.

Diarmaid O’Sullivan, Services Manager with Threshold said that there was a real need for such a service.

‘With more people than ever now living in the private rented sector, it is essential that tenants are aware of their rights and obligations. When tenants encounter problems in their tenancies they need somewhere to turn to for advice.’ Approximately one in five people in Ireland now rent their home.

Threshold provides advice to tenants on all aspects of renting including; rent increases, notice of termination, illegal eviction, deposit retention and issues with repair and maintenance in rented properties.

The organisation has seen a consistent growth in the demand for its services in the West of Ireland in recent years. In 2014, Threshold’s Galway office provided advice and support to some 1950 tenants, an increase of 10% on the previous year. The areas that saw the greatest growth were tenancy termination, rent increases, and properties going into receivership.

‘The private rented sector is facing real challenges at the moment, with a shortage of rental accommodation and we are witnessing significant increases in rent levels. This is putting a lot of pressure on tenants and it is more important than ever that they get the advice and support they need to enable them to sustain their tenancies’ said Mr O’Sullivan.

‘We are delighted to be delivering this outreach service for Co. Mayo. A trained Threshold Housing Advice Worker will be available to provide advice to tenants on all aspects of housing law’ he said.

Teresa Carney, Development Manager with Mayo Citizens Information Service, agreed that there is a need for comprehensive and quality advice and support in order that tenancies can be sustained, and she welcomes Thresholds decision to offer this outreach service in County Mayo. She sees this as a valuable addition to the Information, Advise and Advocacy Service offered by Mayo Citizens Information Service across the County.

The outreach will be held at Castlebar CIS, Cavendish House, Link Road Castlebar on the 2nd Thursday of every month and will run from 10am-1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm.
