Equality in the Workplace Workshops- Citizens Information ASW Programme partnership project

June 2017

The Citizens Information Service Advocacy Support Worker Programme (ASW) was recently awarded funding for capacity building in the area of human rights and equality by the Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission (IHREC). The overall objective of the project was to further develop the capacity of frontline Citizen Information Service (CIS) staff in the areas of employment equality in the workplace when advising members of the public.

In March and April 2017, the ASW Programme in conjunction with the Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission (IHREC) and the Citizens Information Board (CIB) delivered five regional Workshops nationally for Information Providers/Designated Advocates in Employment Equality Law & the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) titled, Building Capacity of the Citizens Information Service Information Providers/Dedicated Advocates with the WRC on Equality in the Workplace.

These Workshops focused on the areas of age, race and gender and provided training to over 110 Information Providers/Designated Advocates nationally. The ASW Programme developed the Workshops in consultation with the Adjudication Service of the WRC and in particular Mr. Hugh Lonsdale, Adjudicator.

The Workshops were delivered in two segments; the morning session focused on the legislation applicable to Employment Equality issues and how to present a case before the WRC and the afternoon session focused on an Equality case study and roleplay exercise that was adjudicated by Mr. Hugh Lonsdale. Feedback from participants at all sessions was very positive.

The IHREC and the Citizens Information Board were thanked for their funding and support as were the facilitators Mr Hugh Lonsdale, Adjudicator WRC, Ms. Orla Ryan O’Kelly BL and Ms. Caoimhe Ruigrok BL.
