Thurles CIC celebrates 40 years of service

November 2015

The Source Arts Centre was the venue for the 40th Anniversary celebration event of the Thurles Citizens Information Centre, recently. The large attendance marked the importance of the service to the people of Thurles and the wider community. Guest speakers included Mary Guilfoyle, the current Volunteer Organiser in the CIC, Toni Gleeson, Chairperson, Co. Tipperary Citizens Information Service and Angela Black, Chief Executive, Citizens Information Board. The guest of honour on the day was Judge Yvonne Murphy who was involved in training the first volunteers back in 1975.

To mark the occasion an essay competition was held in the local schools. Two Transition Year students read out their winning essays entitled: "What every teenager should know about the Citizens Information Service in Ireland". It was one of the highlights of the afternoon.

Presentations were made to the Volunteer Organisers who had managed Thurles CIC down through the years and to Kitty Quinn who was a founding member and is still a volunteer today.

Mary Guilfoyle and Kitty Quinn cut the anniversary cake and everyone enjoyed the opportunity to catch up on memories prompted by a presentation that featured many of the highlights of Thurles CIC since 1975.
